Still, the Jeepster was produced in the following year (1949), this time with the option of the six-cylinder Lightning L-148 engine, and in 1950, received a few modifications to the hood and grille. Soon to become the ubiquitous, world-famous jeep, the Willys MB and Ford GPW models were very effective on the ground, with many standardized features such as 6.00x16 tires, 60 honest horsepower at 4,000 rpm, a gasoline can bracket on the left rear, provision for trailer lights, spark interference suppression, a blackout light system, twin top b. The 1948 Jeepster was powered by the “Go Devil” 62 hp, 134 cu in straight-4 engine, with 3-speed manual transmission (with optional overdrive), drum brakes, a single transverse leaf spring suspension and rear driveline similar to what was used in the Willys Station Wagon at the time. Offered only in rear-wheel drive, the vehicle had some trouble gaining traction with traditional Willys customers. The original Jeepster (VJ) was first released to the public on April 3, 1948. Following the end of WWII, the Willys-Overland company chairman recognized the importance of expanding its offerings to include a civilian passenger car, and with the help of industrial designer Brooks Stevens, presented a model more likely to appeal to younger market segments. Also, there’s an indentation in the passenger side cowl on the M38A1 for an electrical connection that is not included on the CJ-5.The Willys-Overland Jeepster, borrowing features from both the Willys Station Wagon and Truck, attempted to bridge the gap between the “utilitarian” post-war Universal CJ Series, and the 1-ton "family-oriented" Station Wagons and 1/2 ton light-utility trucks. The Jeep I just bought is one of those ex-military models. The United States military bought 80,290 of those Jeeps, and many of those were sold to the public at the conclusion of their service. Production of the M38A1 went on until 1971, with 101,499 examples produced. The M38A1 still has fixed seats and a big wheel, but it’s enough larger than a 6-foot person can comfortably drive it. You can tell the M38A1 at a glance because the front fenders curve down at the forward edge like all newer Jeep designs. It was bigger than the older models, with a better ride and a more powerful engine. In 1952, Willys brought out a new Jeep design called the M38A1.
